Tetanus is a medical condition that is very dangerous and one that can often prove to be fatal. The main manifestation of the disease is through muscle spasms which can occur thanks to a neurotoxin called tetanospasmin which is produced by the bacteria Clostridium tetani. The toxin can enter the body through a deep wound which is usually caused by something sharp and rusty.
Most people associate this disease with rust. That is why when someone pricks their finger on a rusty nail or a rusty saw blade they go and get a tetanus shot. It is not guaranteed that you will be infected in every instance when you prick yourself on a nail. However, seeing as how the condition has an 11% mortality rate which is most frequent among those that do not get the vaccine, it is better to be safe than sorry.
Even though most people think that they can get tetanus only from a rusty nail, that is not really the case. The rust simply provides a proper situation for the bacteria to develop and the nail is a good way for the toxin to get into the human body. However, this does not mean that there are not other ways in which you can get infected with tetanus. If you are infected it can take a long time for symptoms to present themselves, taking anywhere from 8 days to a few months. It basically depends on how far from the central nervous system the toxin has entered the body.

Thanx for telling me this I’ve literally just had mine about 10 mins ago and I keep on having a series of stings every now and then. Is that normal?
I am a 38 year old woman, and of good health. Recently I got a tetanus shot. For two days I had a VERY bad headache, was very tired, had a fever, chills and had extensive pain and rash in the area of the vaccine. My doctor said, although this is rare, it sometimes happens. Be prepared with some pain relievers.
How long do the side effects last for because I am feeling like crap right now and do not wish to die

29 yrs old here & I got my tetnus shot at work thursday AM. It is now almost 24hrs later and my arm & shoulder hurt SOOO bad. I have a rather high pain tolerance but this HURTS!! I took 4 tylenol yesterday and it didn’t really help. I feel like crap as well!!!! Hope this goes away soon! Why does it have to hurt so much! =’(
My arm is very sore around the area where I got the injection and I am on my 3rd day now. According to this article I should contact my doctor. My stomach is also gassy and I’m having trouble sleeping, hence this response at 5:00am. Thanks for the advice!
suck it up people!
just kidding good luck all.
Yup, I got my shot about 6 hours ago, when I first got the shot I hardly felt it, 15 minutes later my arm felt sore, but the doctor said that’s normal. Right now it hurts more but the doctor says exercising the arm will make it go away. By the way I’m twelve haha.
This was sooo helpful. I haven’t had any other effects other then my arm feeling like its gonna fall off. Fingers crossed I dont get anything else…
I just had my shot almost 24 hours ago and today my arm is hurting (which I knew would happen) but what I wasn’t expecting was the chills, achy body, fatigue, and slight fever! I sincerely hope this passes soon. Had I known that these were the symptoms, I might have waited until a Friday to get the shot.
I got mine 2 days ago & My arm is a little sore But, I have had the worst stomach pain, and feel so weak, Now I am 39 , do you think age makes a diffrence, did any one else feel any of this? I feel so awful, i thought I had a food illness
i am 30 and i had a tetanus injection a day after a bike accident in which i suffer some injuries in my leg.
After 3/4 hours of injection, i got allergies in my lips.
Got mine two days ago. Arm hurts, pain through the shoulders and neck… Sniffling and sneezing, but that may be from the flu shot I got along with it… worse at night. Stomach was feeling very queasy today like I hadn’t eaten all day, when in fact I ate every meal… So weird and annoying. Oh well. Hard with three kids under four yrs old.
